Before You Call For Service

Five-minute checks that fix the most common AC problems — and how to tell when it's time to call us instead.

Monthly upkeep

Keep it running well

A few habits prevent most breakdowns before they start.

Check the air filter every 30 days

1

Hold it up to a light — if you can't see through it, replace it. A clogged filter is the #1 cause of weak airflow and frozen coils.

Clear the outdoor unit

Keep leaves, grass clippings, and plants at least 2 feet back so it can breathe.

2

Check the thermostat batteries

A dying battery can cause a unit to stop responding or shut off unexpectedly.

3

Make sure vents are open and unblocked

Furniture, rugs, and curtains over vents force the system to work harder.

4

Look at the drain line near the indoor unit

5

If it's dripping steadily or pooling, it may be clogged — see below.

Troubleshooting

Something's off? Start here.

Match what you're seeing, then work through the steps in order.

Unit won't turn on

  1. Check the thermostat is set to Cool (or Heat) and the temperature is below (or above) room temp.

  2. Check the breaker for the AC hasn't tripped — reset once if it has.

  3. Replace the thermostat batteries if the screen is blank or dim.

Not cooling or heating enough

  1. Replace the air filter if it's dirty.

  2. Confirm the outdoor unit is clear of debris and has airflow on all sides.

  3. Check that all supply vents in the house are open.

  4. Give it 30–45 minutes after any changes — big temperature swings take time.

Ice on the indoor unit or lines

  1. Turn the system off completely (not just the thermostat) at the breaker.

  2. Let it thaw fully — this can take 2–4 hours. Don't chip or scrape the ice.

  3. Check the filter once thawed; a dirty filter is the most common cause.

  4. If it re-ices after restarting, stop and call us — this can point to a refrigerant issue.

Water leaking or pooling near the indoor unit

  1. Turn the system off to stop more water from accumulating.

  2. Check that the condensate drain line isn't visibly blocked or disconnected.

  3. Place towels down and call us if the leak continues — the drain may need clearing.

Burning smell, sparking, or loud grinding

  1. Turn the system off at the breaker immediately.

  2. Do not attempt to open the unit or troubleshoot further.

  3. Call us right away — this isn't a DIY fix.
